The Risks of Running Unsupported MYOB Software in 2026

The "If It Ain't Broke" Trap

For years, a lot of businesses have lived by the golden rule of legacy software: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. You bought your MYOB license a decade ago, it still opens, it still records your bills, and your finance team knows the data entry shortcuts by heart.

But as an IT or Finance Manager, you know that keeping an outdated system on life support isn't a long-term strategy—it is a massive risk.

If your company is still running a legacy version of MYOB—specifically Accounting version 24.2 and below, or Premier version 19.2 and below in Singapore—the countdown has officially started. ABSS has announced a hard ABSS end of support deadline for these older platforms, set for 30 June 2026.

When the activation servers are finally shut down, your system won't just be unsupported—it will eventually flip into a "read-only" mode. You will be completely locked out of creating or editing transactions.

But even before that deadline hits, the MYOB obsolete software risks are already piling up. Here is what is really at stake if you delay the upgrade.

1. Security Vulnerabilities and OS Incompatibility

Cybercriminals love obsolete software. Legacy MYOB versions were built on an older technical framework that belongs to a different era. They simply cannot meet today's strict security protocols and expectations.

The biggest operational risk here is your operating system. As Microsoft discontinues support and security patches for older operating systems like Windows 7, 8.1, and 10, continuing to run them leaves your company's computers at a much greater risk of viruses and malware. On the flip side, older versions of the accounting software often do not work reliably on newer computers and modern operating systems.

By refusing to upgrade the software, you are basically forcing your IT department to choose between keeping the accounting system running or keeping the company’s network secure.

2. Failing Modern Compliance

Accounting isn't just about balancing the books internally anymore. The government and tax authorities are demanding faster, cleaner, and more structured data.

Modern compliance needs, such as real-time validation and digital reporting features, require newer software capabilities that these 10-year-old legacy versions simply cannot support. For example, the older versions are not equipped for modern e-Invoicing readiness like the GST InvoiceNow framework.

When your software cannot natively meet these new compliance frameworks, your finance team is forced to do manual workarounds—exporting data, manipulating spreadsheets, and uploading files to third-party portals. That is a huge waste of time and a massive risk for human error.

3. The "Read-Only" Business Blackout

The most immediate and severe risk is the upcoming decommissioning date. After 30 June 2026, the Activation and Confirmation Server (A&CS) for these legacy ABSS versions will be permanently disabled.

What does this mean for your daily operations? After your next scheduled confirmation cycle hits, your entire company file will lock itself into read-only access.

  • You will still be able to view and reference past historical data.

  • You will no longer be able to create new transactions or do any data entry.

  • You will not be able to edit any existing transactions.

  • The software will completely stop supporting your ongoing business operations.

Imagine your entire finance department coming to a grinding halt because nobody can process a payment or issue a customer invoice.
